2009 Academy Awards

Good Monday to you, fair readers and Biography Resource Center users. We’re a tad bleary-eyed this morning after a rough night watching Hollywood’s self-congratulatory prom otherwise known as the Oscars. Some tidbits from our content repository:

  • Host Hugh Jackman wore a kilt as part of his school uniform growing up
  • Sean Penn, winner of the Best Actor category for his performance in Milk was once married to Madonna (we know, common knowledge, but it was half a lifetime ago and bears remembering!)
  • Anne Hathaway, nominee for Best Actress for her performance in Rachel Getting Married, shares a name with Shakespeare’s wife…and almost shares one with Ann Hathaway, an elementary school teacher born in Rantoul, Illinois
  • A.R. Rahman, who won two Oscars (Best Song, Best Original Score) for Slumdog Millionaire, was born A. S. Dileep Kumar — you can search him by this name in BioRC, even, thanks to our variant name functionality
  • Steven Okazaki, who directed Best Documentary Short nominee The Conscience of Nhem En, previously won an Oscar in the same category for 1991’s Days of Waiting. Okazaki began his career making cultural and educational children’s films
