We don’t need no thought control

Twenty years ago today, the Berlin Wall opened for business as something other than a symbol and instrument of repression. We have hundreds of biographies that reference the Wall, for everyone from West German politician Egon Bahr, who helped reduce tension between the West and East, to GDR leader Walter Ulbricht, who stated “nobody intends to build a wall” not two months before construction on the Wall began. These biographies can be located with an Advanced full-text search for “berlin wall.”

After you’re done perusing our Wall-related biographies, check out the New York Times’ superb “Berlin Wall Through Time” interactive.
